Dried blood spots (DBS) have many advantages over traditional sample matrices such as serum, plasma, and liquid whole blood. Chief among these advantages is simplified sample collection, storage, and shipment. DBS from finger sticks can be collected and shipped without freezing or cold storage, eliminating the need for a centrifuge, freezers, or even a phlebotomist. Ultimately, DBS enables decentralized sample collection, whether in areas lacking laboratory infrastructure, long term studies that struggle with patient retention, or monitoring of chronic diseases.
A volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) proves to be a feasible method for measuring SARS-CoV-2 IgG by the Simoa® SARS-CoV-2 IgG Antibody Assay. With excellent repeatability, correlation, and stability showed in initial results, this novel sample collection method could help mobilize a new chapter of large-scale sample testing that can be easily performed at home with minimal instructions.
